Evidence over marketing

What is behind the label?

The short version of the research. What was studied, who it applies to and what remains unknown. Product quality also needs traceable batch analyses.

Magnesium

Research, explained

Look at the magnesium amount and its chemical form. Better absorption alone does not prove better sleep or performance.

What was studied

A randomized study in 46 healthy people compared citrate, oxide and an amino-acid chelate: citrate showed better absorption measures.

What remains uncertain

Absorption markers are not health outcomes. Small studies do not establish superiority for every product or person.

Zinc

Research, explained

Zinc is essential. More is not automatically better quality; high intakes can interfere with copper absorption.

What was studied

In 15 healthy adults, 10 mg zinc was tested without food. Citrate and gluconate had similar absorption, higher than oxide.

What remains uncertain

A small absorption trial proves neither an immune benefit nor brand superiority. Results with a meal may differ.

Vitamin D3

Research, explained

Vitamin D supports calcium absorption. The benefit of extra intake depends on baseline status; a higher dose is not higher quality.

What was studied

VITAL tested 2,000 IU D3 daily in 25,871 men aged 50+ and women aged 55+. Overall, fractures were not reduced.

What remains uncertain

Participants were not selected for vitamin D deficiency. This finding does not replace treatment of a diagnosed deficiency.

Vitamin K2

Research, explained

Vitamin K matters for blood clotting. That does not mean every D3 product needs K2 or that K2 prevents vascular calcification.

What was studied

A randomized trial in 365 men with aortic valve calcification found no significant effect of MK-7 plus vitamin D on calcification progression after two years.

What remains uncertain

A biomarker is not proof of fewer heart attacks. Patient-group findings do not generalize to everyone. Vitamin K interacts with vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin.

EPA

Research, explained

Oil weight is not active content: check EPA and DHA separately. Algal oil can be a vegan source; the actual composition matters.

What was studied

VITAL tested 1 g marine omega-3 daily in 25,871 older adults. The primary combined cardiovascular endpoint was not significantly reduced.

What remains uncertain

The trial tested an EPA/DHA mixture, not this nutrient alone or an algal-oil product. Prescription trials do not establish benefits for arbitrary supplements. EFSA has not established a UL; an assessed safe intake is not an upper limit or personal recommendation.

Creatine

Research, explained

Creatine monohydrate is the most studied form for repeated short, intense exercise. A more expensive name is not a proven advantage.

What was studied

The ISSN research review summarizes muscle creatine stores, intense exercise and training studies. Monohydrate has the broadest evidence base.

What remains uncertain

Training outcomes also depend on exercise and diet. The review discloses industry relationships and certifies no product.

Protein

Research, explained

Protein supports muscle gain alongside resistance training. Daily intake and amino-acid profile matter, not just the protein percentage on the pack.

What was studied

A meta-analysis of 49 studies in 1,863 healthy adults found additional muscle and strength gains from protein during resistance training.

What remains uncertain

These results do not rank individual powders. Overall diet and baseline intake influence the extra benefit.
